Southern Pacific 2-8-0

Jim Harper has one of the finest Proto48 layouts in the country. It fills a three-car garage in his home in Reno. Jim’s track is all hand-spiked with individual tie plates and four spikes per tie. He used cast frogs and points so his track is as well detailed as his models. Recently, Jim has converted to DCC operation with sound. The SP 2-8-0 shown in the lead photo on this site and again in this section is a PFM import. It has sound and DCC with drivers and wheels converted to P48. Jim also has a model of a SP S-10 0-6-0 switch that was brought in by Westside Models many years ago. It came equipped with a unique 52-C-1 cylindrical tender.

As you can gather from the photos, Jim models the Southern Pacific in the 1950’s. His talents include excellent scenery, beautiful structures and some very impressive bridges. The photos included herein were taken by Brett Whelan during his recent visit the Wild West.
