Southern Pacific 4-10-2 class SP-1

Car & Locomotive Works produced an exquisite model of the Southern Pacific 4-10-2 three-cylinder locomotive class SP-1. The model was offered in O gauge only. Norm Buckhart, Protocraft owner, had Roy Pietschmann convert the model to Proto48. C&LW did not bring in an as-delivered model so Roy had to make some changes:

  • remove one sand dome
  • scratch build the center spoked driver
  • change some piping to name a few
  • New P:48 tires and the rest are Protocraft's wheels.

The engine was repainted and lettered by Errol Spangler. Norm believes that the model is "probably the finest engine on my layout".The model operates on constant track voltage of 13.7 volts and is controlled by a Locolinc radio throttle. It is equipped with a Phoenix digital sound. A new baffle behind the speaker was built to enhance the base sound substantially. The volume is adjustable but if you want you can hear it all though the house.

Lighting was connected using a series of diodes and resisters so that all number boards are light with 1.5 v lamps.
